Fidda Mittens

The design is simple, worked from the cuff up with a thumb gusset, and features an easy 4-stitch geometric colourwork pattern.

The pattern includes three sizes and is also perfect for stashbusting as you can combine different yarn weights to achieve the bulky gauge. But the colour-changing yarn makes them especially addictive to knit.

Yarn used in the sample is 1 skein of Farmer’s Daughter Fibres Oh Dang! DK (90% Suri Alpaca, 10% Silk; 225 m [246 yds] / 100 g) in Love Me Like You Used To held double as main colour and 1 skein of Spincycle Yarns Plump (100% American Wool, superwash; 91 m [100 yds] / approximately 100 g) in Ghost Ranch as contrast colour.

Note that you’ll need twice the yardage if holding yarn double.

• 5 mm (US 8) or needle size that gets the gauge; circulars or DPNs for small circumference knitting.

These mittens are worked seamlessly in the round, starting from the cuff in the main colour with a 1x1 rib.

The thumb gusset has a simple colourwork pattern. It's shaped by increasing stitches at the thumb's base. Thumb stitches are then held, while the rest are joined to work the hand in the same colourwork pattern up to the top.

The closure is worked in main colour by decreasing about two-thirds of the stitches on both sides of the palm, then grafting the remaining stitches.

The thumb stitches are picked up, joined with a few stitches picked up along the top of the thumb opening, and worked in the main colour in the round to the top. The thumb is closed in the same way as the hand.
