P.S. If you're a confident lace knitter, for a more uniform all-over lace look you can replace the stockinette sections with partial lace repeats, making sure to adjust the increases and decreases to maintain a balanced stitch count.

Designed to be worn with 0-10 cm / 0-4” positive ease around the chest.

Gauge

1 lace pattern repeat (12 sts x 16 rows) = 5 x 5 cm / 2x2” worked flat on larger needles, blocked. (In stockinette, roughly 24 sts & 32 rows =10 cm / 4”)

Yardage

Fingering or Sport weight yarn. Depending on the length of the cardigan and chosen shaping option, allow approximately (includes extra for swatching):

Yarn in Sample

Yarn used in the sample (Size 2) is 5 balls of Lang Yarns Vaya (74% Cotton, 15% Merino extra-fine, 10% Yak; 200 m [219 yds] / 50 g) in colour 0094.

Needles

• 3.75 mm (US 5) or size needed to obtain gauge; circulars 60-150 cm / 24-60″ long and (optional) DPNs for small circumference knitting.
• 2.75 mm (US 2) circulars 60-150 cm / 24-60″ long and (optional) DPNs for small circumference knitting.

Notions

Stitch markers, row counter, scissors, tape measure, stitch holders or waste yarn, tapestry needle,  7-10 12 mm / ½” buttons.

Techniques

Lace knitting, lifted increases, Backwards loop cast-on, knitting in the round, yarnover buttonholes, Knotted k2tog bind-off.

Notes

The cardigan is worked seamlessly and flat from the top-down. It starts by casting on stitches for the back neckline and shaping the shoulders using lifted increases.

Stitches are then picked up along the back shoulders to create the front shoulders, working each side separately with increases to shape the front neckline.

Next, stitches are picked up along the front shoulder edges, and the yoke is worked in one piece down to the underarm. Increases are added along the neckline, sleeves, and body during this section.

The sleeves are separated, and the body is worked in one piece down to the hem. Optional waist shaping can be added, and the hem is finished with a twisted 1x1 rib and a decorative knotted k2tog bind-off.

The sleeves are worked separately in the round down to the cuffs, with decreases, and finished with the same twisted rib as the hem.

The neckband is added by picking up stitches along the neckline and working a twisted 1x1 rib flat to the desired height.

Finally, button bands are added by picking up stitches along the front edges and working twisted 1x1 rib, incorporating yarnover buttonholes.
