New Pattern Release

My new design, the Layan Cardigan, started with yarn. I saw this very interesting noodle-like looking yarn in the Artfil Yarns at Woolen Affair last year, and a new collaboration idea was born. I wanted to make something that I would want to wear often, and what I needed was a classic cabled cardigan, one that could become a true staple. Something timeless rather than trendy.

The name Layan comes from Arabic and means “soft, gentle, and tender.” It captures the exact feeling I wanted this piece to have, both in its appearance and in how it feels to make.

The yarn is Bar A Tricot Champagne 2.0, which is a mohair and silk blend, and I chose the colourway Sandstorm. It gives the fabric a gorgeous drape and a subtle sheen that really brings out the cable texture.

The cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top-down, with the sleeves picked up and worked simultaneously alongside the yoke. The cable pattern runs throughout the entire garment, but it is a simple two-by-two cable that becomes intuitive very quickly.

This is an intermediate-level pattern, and the ability to read cable charts is required. I have also put together a deep-dive video on YouTube that walks you through the full construction, techniques and possible modifications.

Next week, I will share the Ailis Sweater. This is the fourth design in the Latvian mitten collection, but this one features a twist.

Instead of colourwork at the yoke, the beautiful motif sits at the bottom of the body and the sleeves.

You will also have the choice to make it as a pullover or a steeked cardigan. More details are coming soon!
